We’ve all heard that in order to grow, you need to rest—to allow the seed you planted time to sprout and flourish. But did you know there are different types of rest beyond the physical rest we usually associate with it? Below, I’ll outline the types of rest that nourish your mind, body, and soul. Of course, I’ll include some whimsical cat drawings and tips for you to take along with you.

Physical Rest

This is what people usually think of when they hear “rest.” It’s time for your body to slow down and recover.

  • Take a nap

  • Limit distractions near bedtime to prioritize restful sleep

  • Massage

  • Stretching

Mental Rest

Mental rest is when you give your brain a break. Think (or actually, don’t think!) about low stress tasks or activities that allow your mind to recharge.

  • Prioritize breaks every couple of hours during work

  • Try breathing exercises

  • Swap heavy mental tasks for simpler ones like folding laundry, decluttering a desk, coloring, or working on a puzzle

  • Write or doodle to release thoughts and clear mind

Sensory Rest

This one can be challenging for many of us. Sensory rest means giving yourself a break from overstimulation.

  • Limit electronic use

  • Challenge: set your phone to “Do Not Disturb” for 30 minutes a day

  • Listen to calm, quiet music or enjoy silence

  • Eat slowly, without your phone or TV in the background

Emotional Rest

Emotional rest gives you space to process your feelings and ensures you are surrounded by safe environments and supportive people.

  • Process emotions with a trusted friend or therapist

  • Set boundaries with emotionally draining people or environments

  • Journal your thoughts and feelings

  • Practice mindfulness through stretching, breathing exercises, or walking

Creative Rest

Creative rest is about engaging in activities that inspire wonder and curiosity.

  • Take a nature walk

  • Explore hobbies that spark your imagination, like visiting a museum or listening to new music

  • Learn a new skill

  • Watch a documentary

Social Rest

Social rest has two sides. It’s about spending time with people who energize you while also knowing when to enforce boundaries and recharge alone.

  • Prioritize supportive and meaningful relationships

  • Allow yourself guilt free alone time

  • Go on a solo date

  • Practice saying "no" to activities or people that drain you

Spiritual Rest

Spiritual rest helps you connect with what is meaningful and purposeful to you. It often includes community, but doesn’t have to.

  • Connect with nature

  • Meditate

  • Volunteer

  • Be part of a community or cause that aligns with your values

Rest isn’t just a pause, it’s a part of growing. Each type of rest nurtures a different part of you, helping your mind, body, and soul bloom. When you make space for rest, you give yourself permission to recharge, to play, and to be inspired. So take a moment, curl up with your favorite cat drawing, and trust that with every little pause, you are growing in your own gentle, magical way.
